If you have a physical or cognitive disability or are an aging adult and you are looking to get back on the road, Good Shepherd’s Safe Driver Evaluation and Training Program can help.

The goal is to improve your independence by helping you obtain or retain your driver’s license. 

The expert therapists, certified driver rehabilitation specialist and assistive technology professionals  in Good Shepherd’s Driver Evaluation and Training Program will determine your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and provide appropriate driver training. 

For individuals with disabilities, getting behind the wheel may require the use of some adaptive equipment or assistive technology. In this case, Good Shepherd’s therapists will make recommendations and connect you with appropriate vendors to install assistive devices or conversions, such as lowered-floors with a ramp, reduced-effort steering, hand controls, steering devices and left gas pedals.

Services available in the Driver Evaluation and Training Program include:

  • Clinical Evaluation:  Our assistive technology professionals will evaluate your physical function by accessing your range of motion, strength, coordination, sensation and reaction time.
  • Behind the Wheel:  A certified driver rehabilitation specialist will take you on the road with a Good Shepherd training vehicle to evaluate your driving skills. You must have a valid driver’s license or permit to participate in the evaluation.
  • Van Evaluations:  Various adaptive devices and conversions can help you drive with or without a wheelchair.
  • Transportation Evaluations: Our therapists will work with you, your family members and caregivers to help you choose the proper vehicle to improve your independence.
  • Training: We will work with you to practice your driving skills, with or without adaptive devices.
  • Education: Good Shepherd will provide information on procedures, licensing and driving equipment.

Results of the program and recommendations may include:

  • A report sent to your physician (with a copy to you)
  • A report sent to Workers’ Compensation
  • A written prescription of adaptive driving aids and a list of vendors’ recommendations
  • A prescription for equipment assessment (car toppers, lifts, ramps, etc.)
