Optimal Fitness: Massage Therapy
Relax and be well with Good Shepherd’s Massage Therapy Program. At Good Shepherd, various types of therapeutic massages are administered by certified massage therapists with extensive training in manual massage techniques including myofascial release, deep muscle massage, trigger point therapy and Manual Lymph Drainage.
Levels of care:
Massages offered at Good Shepherd
- Craniosacral Therapy: A hands-on modality that helps balance the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and flowing down through the spinal column to the sacrum.
- Hot Stone Massage: A specialty massage that uses smooth, heated, basalt black volcanic stones, which absorb and retain heat and deeply soothe and relax tight muscles.
- Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT): LDT manually uses rhythm, light pressure and direction of lymph flow, following a full-body evaluation to determine direction of flow and areas of congestion.
- Sports Massage: This treatment, which generally follows the Swedish system, is designed to prepare athletes for upcoming events and to aid in the body’s regenerative and restorative process following a rigorous workout or competition
- Swedish Massage: Based on the western concepts of anatomy and physiology, Swedish massage uses the traditional manipulative techniques of effleurage, petrissage, friction and tapotement.
Good Shepherd’s Inpatient Massage Program:
Certified massage therapists offer craniosacral, Swedish and LDT massages to inpatients in the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital-Allentown. Most massages are done in the hospital bed while the patient lies on his or her side or back.
Massages are available Tuesdays and Fridays. The cost is $1 per minute, based on 15-minute increments.
Patients must get an order from their doctor or nurse and pre-pay. Cash, check or credit cards are accepted.
