About James and Gail Miller
James H. Miller, chairman and chief executive officer of PPL Corporation since 2006, has more than 35 years of diverse experience in the energy industry. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Miller received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Delaware. He also served in the U.S. Navy nuclear submarine program.
Miller serves on the executive committee of the Edison Electric Institute and is a member of the boards of the Nuclear Energy Institute and Nuclear Electric Insurance Limited. He also serves on the board of directors of Crown Holdings, Inc., of Philadelphia and Rayonier Inc., of Jacksonville, Florida.
In the community, Miller serves on the boards of directors for the Allentown Symphony Orchestra and the Lehigh Valley Partnership, and on the board of trustees for Lehigh Valley Health Network. In addition, he is part of the leadership team of Education 2020! – a group of business and community leaders dedicated to improving education in Allentown.
"Good Shepherd has a long history of community support and has grown to be a leader in its field,” says Miller. “Because of our great interest in supporting early childhood education and the well-being of children in general, it was an easy decision for Gail and I to agree to chair the 2012 gala for such a worthwhile cause."
Gail Miller is a very active community volunteer. She currently serves on the board and is the acting secretary of the Boys & Girls Club of Allentown, whose mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need the most help, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.
Gail is a founding member of the Women's Leadership Initiative (WLI). WLI's mission is to mobilize women to become powerful leaders through their philanthropy and advocacy, to engage women in promoting positive change in the lives of women and children in the LehighValley, and to recognize women for their efforts. She is also a member of the AllentownArt Museum's Society of the Arts (SOTA).
As co-chairs, the Millers will serve as fundraising leaders for the annual Gala in the Garden event. The 2011 gala was chaired by Caroll Neubauer, chairman and CEO of B. Braun Medical, Inc., and his wife Ellen. The event netted more than $113,000, a 130 percent increase over the previous year. A plaque has been placed in the Pediatric Unit to permanently recognize those who supported the event.
