Assistive Technology: Environmental Control Experience Center
Good Shepherd's Occupational Therapy Program offers the Environmental Control Experience Center for patients with limited to no hand function. The goal of the center is to help patients gain more independence and ease of access in controlling their home environments. By focusing on the patient's ability and environmental control needs, we are able to match the right technology to fit his or her functional goals.
Trained and experienced occupational therapists evaluate the patient and the patient's home environment and then offer solutions that will help him or her be more independent in the home.
A wide range of technologies are available at the center for demonstration and testing, including:
- Voice activation equipment
- iPad/Android devices
- Infrared technology
- Oversized remote controls
- Single switch technology
- Sip & puff technology
With the right technology, it is possible for the user to control:
- Home access (doors/windows/cabinets)
- Security systems
- Surveillance systems
- Home entertainment
- Phone systems
