What to expect when contacting Good Shepherd’s AAC Program
When you contact the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Program, we first will ask you to provide your diagnosis, reason for evaluation, insurance and contact information.
Next, we will schedule a thorough evaluation with one of our expert therapists to assess your needs and outfit you with the device(s) you need.
This face-to-face evaluation can take approximately sixty minutes to two hours, depending on the complexity of your needs. During the evaluation, we will make an assistive technology device recommendation where appropriate. A device may be lent to you from the Pennsylvania Initiative on Assistive Technology lending library, which is usually available within one to two weeks. Good Shepherd will contact you to check on your progress.
When ordering the device for speech generation, the following documentation is written and organized by the treating therapist:
- A speech-generating device evaluation report and a physician cover letter written when the device is recommended, both signed by a physician
- A prescription for the device signed by a physician
- Additional paperwork is required
The device may arrive one to three months after it is approved by insurance and ordered. Good Shepherd’s occupational and speech therapists will conduct a series of one-hour therapy sessions with you. This will help you get acquainted with the device and use it to the best of your ability, while allowing our therapists to calibrate it to fit your unique needs
