For as long as Macy Slonaker, PTA, can remember, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network always has been a part of her life.
As a young girl, she visited Good Shepherd Home – Raker Center, a long-term care home that serves 99 residents with severe disabilities, frequently to see her father, Randy Weidner (pictured, left), a mechanic who has worked at Good Shepherd for 42 years. Macy’s grandmother, Dolly Weidner, worked in Housekeeping for 40 years before retiring in 2010. Macy herself volunteered every summer at Good Shepherd as a teenager.
Eventually, Macy joined Good Shepherd six years ago as a physical therapist assistant with Outpatient Orthopedics at the Health & Technology Center in South Allentown — carrying on the family’s legacy of service at Good Shepherd.
“I pretty much grew up at Good Shepherd,” Macy says. “My dad would go over and joke around with the residents in Raker. It was a great atmosphere, and I just knew this was the only place I wanted to work.”
Other family members have a connection to Good Shepherd, too. Macy’s uncle, Tim Weidner, works in maintenance at the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Emily Howatt Pliskatt Pediatric Unit in Bethlehem, and she has cousins who have been staff members, too.
A possible fourth-generation Associate is on the way; Macy is pregnant, with a 2022 due date. Macy’s teammates already have a running joke about the next Associate in waiting.
Might the family tradition continue with her yet-to-arrive little one?
“I certainly hope so,” Macy says with a laugh.
