Early Intervention Services

What Is Early Intervention?

Early Intervention services, which include physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or speech therapy, are designed to meet the developmental needs of children with disabilities. Services also meet the family’s needs related to enhancing a child’s development in one or more of the following areas:

  • Physical development, including vision and hearing
  • Cognitive development
  • Communication development
  • Social or emotional development
  • Adaptive development, including feeding and sensory processing

Early Intervention Services Eligibility

As determined by the county, program eligibility includes:

  • Significant delay in one or more areas of development
  • Specialist’s determination that a delay is evident despite not showing up on assessments
  • Known physical or mental condition that has high potential for developmental delays

NOTE: Where appropriate, you can specifically choose Good Shepherd to provide Early Intervention services.

Transition to Outpatient Pediatric Therapy

If you are transitioning your child to outpatient pediatric therapy services, your Good Shepherd Early Intervention therapist can help. They will contact the Good Shepherd location(s) of your choice. Outpatient services may be completed in addition to Early Intervention services or following your child’s transition out of the Early Intervention Program.

A Good Shepherd service representative will contact you to ask additional questions regarding your child’s insurance and any specific scheduling needs. Outpatient services are not associated with state funding; these services will be billed through your child’s medical insurance.  Your child will need a prescription for therapy from their doctor. Each type of therapy (PT, OT and ST) needs a separate prescription. Prescriptions can be faxed directly to the Good Shepherd location of your choice.
