Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy provides many therapeutic elements to patients that can not be duplicated on land. The heated water is very comforting and improves circulation. The resistance to movement that water provides helps to address balance, strength, and postural deficits. The buoyancy of water helps patients perform exercises without bearing unnecessary weight on the legs or spine.

Good Shepherd Rehabilitation offers leading-edge aquatic therapy at eight warm water pools throughout the region. A personalized care plan is developed for you, with exercises performed in the water to relax muscles and prevent falls.

Conditions Treated

• Back pain
• Osteoarthritis
• Chronic pain
• Obesity (usually in combination with another issue such as a total knee replacement)
• Balance/gait disorders
• Neurological disorders (i.e., Parkinson’s, stroke, spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury)
• Fractures
• Kidney conditions
• Heart conditions
• Disorders that limit weight bearing

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy

• Buoyancy allows patients to exercise without stressing affected joints through the legs and back
• Resistance slows movements, allowing patients with balance issues to practice activities without fear of fall-related injuries
• Warm water (92-94°F) relaxes muscle spasms, increases stretching ability and helps muscles perform more efficiently

Equipment

Each warm-water pool features a variety of in-water equipment, including parallel bars for those who need assistance walking, a lift for those who need help getting in and out of the pool and treadmills and exercise bikes in the water.

Exercise Programs

After completing therapy, Good Shepherd offers a variety of pool therapy exercise programs to continue your aquatic fitness.
